Dining Tips for Business

Learn a little about Dining Tips for Business...

Did you know that the business lunch is one of the most common ways of entertaining current or potential clientele? Dining out on business is often employed as an opportunity for both parties to relax and get to know one another outside of an office environment. Many people find it easier to connect with others during business lunches rather than inside the office where there may be more stress or anxiety attached.

As the business lunch (or dinner) is so popular, careful planning is very important, as well as a professional attitude. Remember, even though it’s lunch, the main objective is still business. Therefore, you should prepare for the business lunch accordingly.

First of all, you should always ask the guest about any specific culinary preferences, such as Mexican, Italian, Chinese, etc. It is also advisable to allow the guest to choose a time that is more suitable to them. Likewise, you should choose a restaurant that is conveniently located within a reasonable price range for your budget, as you should pick up the check. You will want to check out all area restaurants carefully in order to obtain the best atmosphere and accommodations for your guest. For instance, if whether your guest is a smoker or not, this is definitely something that should be addressed and looked into out of consideration, regardless of your personal views.

While reservations may not be required, it is still a good idea to make one anyway just to ensure that your party will be expected, especially if there is an unexpected crowd during the time your business lunch is to take place. You should always arrive prior to your guest and notify the server ahead of time that you will be the one picking up the tab. Don’t forget the tip. Generally, anywhere from 15-20 percent is adequate.

Once your party arrives, have them sit opposite of you, making not only conversation easier but eye contact as well. Do not discuss business right away. Allow some time beforehand for light conversation. In fact, having a few drinks (non-alcoholic preferable) while waiting for your food is a good way of breaking the ice.

A successful business lunch can result in fruitful partnerships and greater future prospects. Always remember to do your homework beforehand in order to prepare for and plan your lunch effectively. It also helps to keep the preferences of particular clients filed for future references. While you should relax and enjoy yourself when dining out, maintain professionalism throughout the lunch meeting. Keep the main objective in mind—business.
