With all of the technological advances that exist today, such as laptops and high-speed internet, the home office has become one of the fastest growing workplaces of the business world. Whether you’re working as a telecommuter for another company, a freelancer, or small business owner, a home office career allows you to maintain crucial skills and professionalism all from the comforts of home.
Gone are the days of commuting back and forth to work for these individuals. It is now easier and acceptable to pursue business ventures while managing a household at the same time. However, as with any job, you must be able to maintain a professional image. For instance, it helps to establish a daily/weekly work schedule and adhere to it. The home office professional must be able to manage time effectively without the constant need for supervision.
Not only is it important to let others know exactly what hours you are available to them for business, but it is just as important that your family is made aware of these regular work hours to help minimize disruptions. Generally, a separate room is better but is not always necessary unless your business expects to see lots of clients within the home. Otherwise, any adequate space will do when getting started, provided it can accommodate all of the office equipment necessary for completing your work-related tasks.
Some of the most essential tools for the home office include a desk and suitable chair with an updated computer equipped with high-speed internet for faster uploading or downloading of files. Equally important is a phone (preferably a separate line), a printer, and fax machine. All-in-one printers are great for the home office with faxing, scanning, copying, and printing capabilities all in one machine. The home office professional will find work more productive when staying up to date on all of the latest technologies made available to them as well as using these within the home office. Also, it is vital that people working from home be aware of the importance of keeping adequate financial records, including expenses, taxes, and supplies.
Many home office workers are telecommuters, working for others. However, others are simply individuals in pursuit of fulfilling lifelong dreams of owning a small business conducted from home or those simply looking to generate a second income while raising a family. Whatever the circumstance, you should keep in mind that not everyone is suited for working strictly from home. As with any job, there are downsides. The home office worker can become very isolated due to the lack of social contact. Therefore, you should know ahead of time whether or not this will be an issue before jumping into it.
On the bright side, however, your time is much more flexible, which comes in handy when raising children. Gone are the days of feeling guilty about going to work and leaving the kids with a sitter. With today’s technologies and the home office, you can now enjoy the best of both worlds.
