Anxiety is on the rise, and is quickly becoming common. It is estimated by the National Institutes for Health that 19 million Americans suffer from some sort of anxiety disorder. There are many prescription treatment options available on the market, but many consumers are becoming wary of using prescription medication to treat their anxiety disorders. Alternative options are available as well, and one of these alternative options is the use of herbs to find relief.
Herbalism is a complementary and alternative medical system that has been practiced for centuries, and many herbs have been shown to have positive affects in those suffering from Anxiety. Verbena, Damiana, St. John’s Wort, Scullcup, Ashwagandha, Kava Kava, and Passion Flower have all been historically indicated for use in cases of anxiety. Verbena is good for people suffering from nervous exhaustion, which can be a problem for people with anxiety disorders. Passion Flower acts as a sedative and has a relaxing affect. It also offers relief to those suffering from such anxiety symptoms as heart palpitations and nervous jitters. Scullcap is another natural sedative that helps with nervous tension.
Kava Kava and Valerian, two of the more well-known herbs for relieving anxiety, help to quiet a racing mind. The also helps with muscle tension and have sedative qualities, making them a great way to relax. St. John’s Wort, another well-known herb, is also a sedative with an overall calming affect. Damiana is a natural tonic for the nerves. It’s good for helping the body deal with stress and anxiety. Chamomile, which is often taken as a tea before bedtime to help induce sleep, has a calming affect and can help alleviate insomnia due to anxiety.
These herbs come in many forms available to the consumer. Some can be used in hot teas. Some are available in single-herb and combination-herb capsules, tinctures, and liquid preparations. Check your local health food store to find out what’s available. Taken as directed, herbs are a great way to seek temporary relief from the symptoms of anxiety without having to resort to prescription treatments that can have a dramatic affect. The idea is to use herbs in order to restore a sense of balance and well-being.
Other alternatives for use in the treatment of anxiety are yoga, meditation, naturopathic remedies, aromatherapy, and acupuncture. Specialists in naturopathy and acupuncture can be sought for guidance in the practice of these alternative remedies. There is no cure for anxiety, but there are options available to help alleviate some of the symptoms associated with anxiety so that the sufferer can lead a more enjoyable life.
