Even with all the weird winter weather we’ve been seeing all over the place, from unseasonably warm temperatures to outlandish snow and ice storms, it has definitely arrived to an unusual extent. This flip-flop in weather patterns not only makes it difficult for us to adjust but our four-legged friends may also be feeling a bit out of sorts. It is oftentimes easy to overlook the needs of our outdoor pets when we are busy dealing with other things; however, it’s essential for their well being that we keep them in mind during the winter months.
If you have cats, try to keep them inside. Not only do cats run the risk of disease or injury from other animals, but they are sometimes prone to crawling beneath the hoods of cars for warmth. Always pound on the hood and wait a while before turning on the engine; the car’s fan belt can kill or injure an animal when the motor starts. Don’t get in the habit of leaving your pet alone in a car during cold weather either. Cars can actually become an instant refrigerator in winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death when left unattended for prolonged periods. As many people prepare their vehicles for winter, keep an eye out for any antifreeze or engine coolant that you (or your neighbors) might have left out. Although animals seem to be attracted to the sweet taste, these products contain chemicals that can seriously harm or even kill your pets. Therefore, be sure to keep these in sealed containers that are inaccessible to your pets or the pets of others.
As we all know winter air is not only cold, but it can be very dry as well. This can leave your pets very dehydrated if there isn’t a constant supply of fresh water on hand for them. Likewise, those bone-chilling temperatures can cause their water to freeze over, making it nearly impossible for them to drink. Check your pet’s water daily to make sure they have sufficient drinking water. Also during winter months, you might want to increase their food supply. Food, especially protein, helps animals stay healthy and strong as well as their fur, which is what helps them to stay warm. Another way to ensure that your pets will stay warm is to inspect their outdoor areas for openings, cracks, etc. You want your pets to be well protected from the cold and wind. Make sure your pets have a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. Adding a layer of straw or cedar bedding is one way to help insulate your pet’s shelter. Alternatively, you can purchase pet bedding suitable to your particular animal. If possible, keep animals inside, especially during excessive cold spells and inclement weather. Did you know that more dogs are lost during winter than any other season? This is largely due to the fact that dogs can lose their scent and become lost when left to wander in snowy or icy situations. Another factor to consider when it comes to winterizing your pets is the type of pet you have. For instance, if you own a shorthaired breed of dog or cat, you may want to consider getting a specially fitted pet sweater to protect against cold weather. Just as we take precautions to stay warm through cold, winter days, so do our pets. By following these winter-friendly tips for our pets, we can help them enjoy a happy and healthy winter.
