There are actually several different categories of world wonders. The list of ancient wonders is the only list that has seven. The list of modern world wonders lists sixteen or more wonders. The list of forgotten world wonders can list twenty or more items. The list of natural world wonders typically lists anywhere from nine to ten wonders. Someone should really revise the name. There isn’t seven world wonders. There isn’t even eight world wonders. There are dozens of world wonders.

What makes a world wonder? A place or object that has been added to the list of world wonders is so incredible that it is beyond comprehension how it came to be. The wonder may be either aesthetically, architecturally or scientifically improbable. Frequently, they are a combination of these factors.

The seven ancient wonder (not eight, remember) was the first world wonder list compiled. It was put together from the writings of ancient Greeks. The other lists of world wonders were compiled later by historians who noted that the ancient Greeks’ list of world wonders was limited by the knowledge and times.

So, unless you are looking for information about King Kong, you now know that there are seven (sixteen, twenty, ten) world wonders, not eight.
