September 11th changes the face of America, especially when it came to travel. These days, fewer people are flying and more are driving. But if you will be flying, there are a few things you need to keep in mind when getting ready to go to the airport.
You need to arrive at the airport two hours early for domestic flights and three hours early for international flights.
Pack smart. Okay, while we all know the obvious ones, like box cutters and knives, but now things like lighters, baseball bats, scissors and anything that could be used as a weapon are not allowed. Even object such as knitting needles an tweezers have been known to have been confiscated. While some objects are strictly forbidden (knives, guns and other weapons) other more questionable objects should be packed into your checked luggage or even just left at home.
Hypodermic syringes and needles now need to have medical documentation. You will need to check with the airline you will be flying with to find out what documentation that airline requires.
Pack fewer items. Now, everything that goes on to a plane must be checked. If the airport you are flying out of, into or through does not have the new machines to check luggage, your bags will have to be hand checked. You will pass through much more quickly if you have fewer bags.
Dress smart. Don’t wear big belt buckles, lots of metal jewelry or other metallic items. Many airports will require you to remove your shoes, so wear shoes that are easy to take off or put on.
Bring your ID. You will be required to show your personal identification several times when traveling by plane. Keep you ID in an easy to reach spot. Book ticket in your exact name. Your ID will be matched to your ticket. Some security may even require the name on your ticket to match your ID exactly. If your ID says “Robert” don’t book your ticket as “Bob”.
Keep your ticket or proof of ticket on you at all times. A paper ticket or receipt for e-ticket will be required to get past security in the terminal.
Some of the changes post 9/11 may make it more cumbersome to fly, but keep in mind that it is for your safety. Follow these tips and the delays will only be slight.
